Really stupid...

If an idea is good, it's on the verge of being stupid. ~ Michel Gondry

I have always had this theory… get a group of people in a room, throw out a bunch of ideas and at the end of the night, look at your list to find the most idiotic and that's the one you should do.

This blog was spawned from one very stupid idea - run the Leadville 100. I gave that a shot in the summer of '07 - completed 73 miles - and survived. The blog lives on...

They figured out a way to make it tougher...

Train don't run out of Wichita... unlessin' you're a hog or a cattle. ~ Owen

There are so many logistics to consider when promoting an event. I flirt with the idea of promoting a race up here from time to time but know there are a lot of hurdles to get over before one can have a successful race. Add trains to the list of hazards to consider. The Des Moines Marathon thought they had this covered. Alas, they were wrong.

Hey man, I know the rd at Collegiate Peaks 50, Burke Kaiser, and the rd of the Fool's Run 50m in Florida, Andy Mathews, both are good dudes and would be full of info on setting up a race, also the rd of the Heartland 100 helped me when I was writing a marketing plan on setting up a ultra race for a class .... if you want to set one up, I'm sure all would help, hell, I'd help, it'd be a blast.

One thing rd's told me, include shorter runs with your ultra (Fool's has a 50 mile, 50k and 15 mile trail run all in one) the entry fees for the shorter races really carry the day.

I may take you up on that. Think it would be fun. Guessing the insurance is the biggest problem/concern. I have a couple of ideas for races - one in the Nederland area and the other in the Black Hawk/Central City corridor. Let's talk about it soon.

Burke aligns himself with the Optimist Club in Buena Vista for the Collegiate Peaks, it's a fund raiser for them, so he's on their insurance ... another race I ran required everyone be a member of USATF ($15/yr) and their insurance covered them. (Burke had a guy die on his course a couple years ago, and another year a buck crashed out of the bushes and punctured a runner's lungs ... but he still has the race so I guess the insurance thing is working)

my favorite part of the article is the 1st comment...."Marathons are a waste of time. What are you trying to prove and to who? Idiots. I like cup-stacking better than a dumb bunny marathon." classic.
